Solve for Lp and Lr of a Compact Web I-shaped Steel Beam:
Calculation:
Designer/Checker:
Input:
Metric Units
(Note: All input Metric units are converted to English units for the equations below and then the output English units are converted back to Metric)
From AISC F2 And F3:
This calculation applies to doubly symmetric I-shaped members and channels bent about their major axis, having compact webs and compact, noncompact or slender flanges.
Radius of gyration y-axis (ry - in or mm)
Effective Radius of gyration (rts - in or mm)*
Steel yield strength (fy - ksi or MPa)
Section modulus about the x-axis, (Sx - in^3 or mm^3)
Torsional constant, (J - in^4 or mm^4)
Constant, c, (For I shape c = 1)**
Distance between flange centroids (ho - in or mm)***
*rts = (((IyCw)^0.5)/Sx)^0.5, can also be conservatively approximated as the radius of gyration of a section of the compression flange plus 1/6 of the web area.
**For Channel, c = (ho/2)((Iy/Cw)^0.5)
***ho is approximately equal to d - tf.
